PLAYERS GO BACK TO SCHOOL

Town players showed their support throughout February for education programmes run for youngsters by Ipswich Town Community Trust.

Owen Garvan and Jaime Peters went to help a class at Rosemary Musker High School in Thetford earlier this month who were taking part in the Trust’s Double Club initiative. After signing a few autographs, the players got to work helping the students with solving their football themed maths problems.

“The class were given a budget and a player price list and had to pick a football team. It was a lot of fun and a great way for the children to practice their number skills” said Jaime.

Meanwhile, Shane O’Connor, Jack Ainsley, Reggie Lambe and Troy Brown came to Portman Road to congratulate pupils who were graduating after completing the Community Trust’s Playing for Success and Double Club learning programmes. The players listened to the students presentations about their experiences on the courses and presented certificates and prizes to those who took part.

Shane said “The students have worked really hard over the course of the programme and it was a great opportunity for us to meet the children involved in the projects.”

Congratulations to students from Ranelagh Primary, Thomas Wolsey School, Whitton Primary, Thurleston High, Handford Hall Primary, Orwell High and Westbourne High who graduated as part of the Playing for Success programme and students from Leiston Middle, Thurleston High, Holywells High and Stoke High who graduated as part of the Double Club programme.

Double Club is an education programme working to develop literacy and numeracy skills of the students by using the medium of sport as well as giving them the chance to take part in active football coaching sessions, which are lead by FA qualified coaches.

Playing for Success (PfS) is a national ‘out of hours learning’ programme designed to raise achievement in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills in 11 to 14 year olds. The programme uses sport as a key device to help improve skills and raise self-esteem and levels of motivation in students involved on the course.
