Project Outline:

The Ipswich Town Community Trust is fully committed to supporting the development of girls and women’s football. A full programme of development exists within the Trust, ranging from grassroots player development through to the Girls’ Centre of Excellence.

A wide range of opportunities for girls exist within the Ipswich Town Community Trust.

Girls’ Player Development Centres

Development Centres are in place to underpin the Girls Centre of Excellence and for female players to progress from grass roots football.

The Centres allow players that are not currently at Centre of Excellence level but are better than grass roots level to develop their football to the best level they can achieve.

Development Centres are located in both Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds.

Girls’ Centre of Excellence

The Girls’ Centre of Excellence runs squads for elite female footballers at Under 10s, Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s.

The Centre of Excellence strives to maintain the highest possible standards and has clear Aims and Objectives. This can be found by clicking here;

Each Centre of Excellence is required to submit a 32-week coaching programme for U10, U12, U14 and U16’s. The coaching programme is not pre-determined by the Football Association but by the Centre Director. There are a number of national core themes that have been adopted by centres across the country – Ipswich included. These are divided into technical and tactical themes;

Technical Themes

  • Footwork
  • Ball Manipulation
  • Turning
  • Dribbling
  • Running with the ball
  • Heading
  • Passing (short and long)
  • Control
  • Defending
  • Shooting

Tactical Themes

  • Defensive themes
  • Attacking themes

Entrance in to the Girls’ Centre of Excellence is via recommendation from the Development Centres. A player showing particular talent may be offered a three-week trial period with the Centre of Excellence, after which they may be offered a continued contract or be recommended to return to the Development Centre if it is felt that this would provide the most appropriate opportunity for further development. In addition, end of season trials, both open and closed, are held to provide an opportunity for access to the Centre of Excellence.
