Playing for Success (PFS) is a national, “out of hours learning” programme designed to raise achievement in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills amongst Key Stage 2 and 3 pup
ils. It uses the medium of sport to raise attainment, self esteem and levels of motivation.
The Ipswich Town Community Trust is proud to manage three distinct Playing for Success learning venues;
Playing for Success is a DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families) initiative run in partnership with sporting organisations and Local Authorities.
The key aims of the programme are to:

Each of our partner schools select 15 pupils from either Key Stage 2 or 3 who attend their nearest centre once a week, for an extended period of time. The average length of programme at a Suffolk Centre is just over 2 months. (10 weeks).
Transportation to and from the centre is provided by the Ipswich Town Community Trust at no cost to our schools. Our drivers very quickly become firm favourites with the students, supporting them in their classrooms before returning them to their schools at the end of each session.
All Playing for Success sessions in Suffolk are delivered by a fully-qualified teacher.
Whilst at the centre pupils take part in many exciting numeracy, literacy and ICT activities, all related to the sport of their centre e.g. those taking part in PFS at Ipswich Town Football Club will take part in activities centered around football whilst those at Oulton Broads will take part in activities involving water sports. Those taking part at Newmarket National Stud, will cover activities that involved horse racing.
Pupils will have the opportunity to use equipment, such as apple mac books, digital cameras and camcorders. Tours of the National Stud and Ipswich Town Football Club are included and pupils at Oulton will enjoy at least one session based out on the water.
At the end of each term pupils are invited to attend a very special graduation where they share their success with family and friends. Graduates are awarded medals and prizes for their achievements.
Playing for Success is a national initiative, funded by the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families) in partnership with a range of professional sporting organisations and Local Authorities.
Each of our venues are funded by the DCSF working in partnership with Suffolk County Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, Ipswich Town Football Club and the National Stud. This means that the entire cost of the programme is fully funded – enabling the programme to be offered free to all schools.

Ipswich Town Community Trust currently manages three distinct Playing for Success Centre. Each of which harnesses the power of a different sport:
The IT Learning Zone was Suffolk’s first Playing for Success centre. Activities at the Zone are themed primarily around football with students studying at the centre experiencing a unique opportunity to work in venues across the Club, including the Media Suite, Boardroom, Directors Box and Club Shop.
The Winning Post is equally unusual. Based within the spectacular National Stud, this venue provides a wonderful opportunity to learn through the “Sport of Kings” – horse racing.
Suffolk’s third centre, The Ripple Effect, is wonderfully located on the very edge of the Broads. Part of the Suffolk Water Sports Centre, the Study Centre themes its curriculum around sailing, canoeing and other inspiring water based activities.
More details on each venue can be found under the Learning Venues section of the Trust’s Website.
