Hold the Back Page is an exciting daytime learning programme offered to schools throughout the region. The one day visit provides the whole class with a chance to develop their liter
acy skills in the unique and challenging environment of a professional sports Club. Combined with an opportunity to include a sports coaching session the programme is a popular choice amongst our region’s schools, offering the chance to be a “journalist for the day” – literally bringing learning to life!
Hold the Back Page is an innovative education programme aimed at promoting literacy and physical education skills to youngsters at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4.
The day comprises of a tour
of a “behind the scenes” tour of Ipswich Town Football Club, a mock media press conference and either football coaching or a commentary activity. The programme gives pupils a unique opportunity to develop their literacy skills within a practical environment. Hold the back page has been running successfully since September 2004 and has seen over 500 aspiring young media moguls through the gates at Ipswich Town Football Club.
This time table shows how a typical “Hold the Back Page” visit would be organised:
* Football coaching can be substituted with a commentary activity.
Please note that accompanying adults are expected to supervise lunch times. Pupils will need to bring a packed lunch with them and sufficient drinks for the course of the day.
The Trust always seeks to allocate two members of staff to each day’s activities ensuring small group sizes and maximum participation for all.
As with all our Education Programmes, teachers are more than welcome to visit the stadium prior to their visit to discuss the programme and activities that their pupils will undertake. However, this is not a requirement as all education activities are led by our experienced and well qualified team of teachers and Education Officers.
Hold the Back Page is offered at a cost of £6 per pupil, with a minimum group size of 30.
Groups of less than 30 are advised to join up with other small groups or to pay the minimum group fee of £180. The Ipswich Town Community Trust is happy to put “small schools” in touch with other interested groups that would like to “session share” – although obviously this is not always possible.
Hold the Back Page is delivered at the IT Learning Zone, within Ipswich Town Football Club. Upon arrival schools are asked to report to the main gate, on Constantine Road.
