Double Clubs is an innovative outreach education programme based around football. It is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) and offers pupils a range of subjects, combined with an active football coaching session.
The name “double” comes from the project being aimed to give school pupils a double experience of learning; the physical participation in sport and the chance to develop their literacy and numeracy skills through the theme of sport.
The Double Club initiative was originally developed by Arsenal FC in 1998 in response to the need to motivate and engage pupils, in particular, boys aiming to improve their reading and writing in inner city schools.

The Ipswich Town Community Trust has been delivering Double Clubs in partnership with Arsenal Football Club for the past 3 years, working with more than 300 children striving to improve their
reading, writing and numeracy as well as developing their sporting skills.
Evaluations of the programme have proven extremely positive with the initiative making a significant impact on pupil achievement.
A typical Double Club programme last approximately 12 weeks and is delivered on an outreach basis at our partner schools. Staff from the Ipswich Town Community Trust would generally work for 3 hours each week with each cohort of pupils.

Funding from the DCSF enables the Trust to extend the Double Club initiative to an additional 4 schools each term – at NO CHARGE to the schools. Schools that have completed a whole year of the funded programme are offered the opportunity to continue their involvement at a competitive rate, subject to coach and teacher availability.
This enables the funding to be shared amongst a higher number of schools and has helped to secure the longevity of this excellent initiative.
Double Clubs are delivered on an outreach basis, usually within a designated, branded room within the school. (Funding is available to help “brand” the allocated room). Double Clubs currently run in a range of schools across the county of Suffolk.
